Lance Porter and Team Fleetwood triumph at Portal

This year's Sunday Driver visit was to the MacDonald Portal hotel in Cheshire. The hotel has two courses: the Premier and the Championship. Unlike in professional football, the Championship was generally agreed to be the better of the two courses, although we did have to play the Premier course in very strong winds. Thankfully, however, we missed the peak of Storm Amy.

It was not a high-scoring trip, with 33 points winning on both days. Alister Weightman beat Lance Porter on countback on day 1 and Lance won on countback from Mick Collins on day 2. This consistency meant that Lance won the overall trip competition, two points ahead of Alister, with Max Hopkins in third place. Team Fleetwood walked away with the team competition, 19 points ahead of second placed Team McIlroy. The absent Ian Forster stole the show in the sweepstakes, winning £100 by guessing the winner of the rolled-over round 2 winner.

The trip was not without its incidents. A wife's hip, a new porch's electricity supply and a dodgy elbow meant that we needed 4 GHOSTs in the end rather than the planned 1, with Richard Scott managing to organise repairs to a punctured tyre around the golf to ensure we didn't need a fifth GHOST. Next year we will probably have a Team GHOST to accumulate unplanned dropouts!

As ever, it was a fun, tiring trip with great company, even if the hotel and courses were slightly disappointing when compared to our recent experiences at Carden Park and Worsley Park in the last 12 months.

Many thanks to the organisers, and for your company.
